high and low

i have recently started playing alto and learnt the ub40 food thought riff,i play it in key of A it sounds ok (probably wrong key though).when i play the second note of E sometimes it sounds low and sometimes it sounds high,can any body explain this because i am doing exactly the same thing,obviously i am after the deeper low E which is more like the record,also i get squeaks,i have changed reeds twice,any help would be appreciated
