It is like making noise with a Kazoo while blowing air in the horn.

Hum while you play. Tricky at first, but gets easier pretty quickly.
Is it like humming and blowing air at the same time?
Exactly. Practice it a bit before you try it on the horn, because at first, it is not as easy as it sounds.

My growl comes from up in my throat kind of like snoring. Yea, it takes practice. Humming into the sax is what we called "Jig tone" which is probably not what you are after. Making a growl while bending a note down sounds very saxy.
